How to Be Fuel-Efficient When Driving

Illuminated Fuel Gauge

Most Chicago drivers are looking for new ways to get the most gas mileage possible out of their vehicles. And can you blame them? It’s hard not to cringe when you have to stop for gas – and there’s no sign of prices decreasing by any significant amount any time soon. However, there is some good news for LaGrange Volkswagen owners. Historically, most Volkswagen models are already excellent when it comes to MPG ratings. To boost your fuel savings, even more, we’ve got some of the best tips on fuel efficiency during your Naperville commute.

5 Fuel-Efficient Driving Habits

It doesn’t matter if you’re headed to work or driving across the country; using these tips will save you a decent amount at the gas pumps:

  • Don’t Mash the Gas. There’s no need to press the gas pedal through the floor when you take off. Press the gas pedal and accelerate slowly. The harder you push the accelerator, the more gas you burn. It should take you about five seconds to bring your car up to 10 MPH.
  • Plan Ahead. When you’re in stop-and-go traffic, this has a negative effect on your fuel economy. It also puts additional stress on your vehicle, leading to premature wear and tear. Check out your GPS before you leave, giving yourself some additional time. If there’s an alternate route that includes taking a highway, this is probably your best bet.
  • No Need for Speed. When you travel at higher rates of speed, you burn a substantial amount of gas. You want the best possible fuel economy when you’re on the highway – this takes place somewhere between 55 and 65 mph.
  • Coasting. Instead of constantly applying pressure to your brakes, examine the road ahead of you. Try and stay a few steps ahead of traffic and take your foot off the gas when you know you’re coming to a stop sign or a traffic light. How can you save fuel while driving on hills? When you’re heading uphill, reduce your speed. Use your vehicle’s momentum when you’re going downhill and take your foot off the gas.
  • Use AC on the Highways. When you drive on the highway with your windows down, you’re placing a drag on your vehicle, lowering your fuel economy. Use your air conditioner when you’re on the highway, and roll your windows down when you’re driving at slower speeds.
