As the current base of operations for Volkswagen’s North American electric vehicles, the Chattanooga factory is focused on the environment. The factory received the 2018 Environmental Excellence award from the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce. The factory also was given the prestigious LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification by USGBC (United States Green Building Council) in 2011. It was the first automobile factory in the world to receive this certification! Other awards and honors that the Volkswagen factory in Chattanooga has received include Best Green Business (2014), Best Place to Work in Chattanooga (2014), the EPA Green Power Leadership Award (2013), and the TN Chamber EE Solid Waste Management Award (2017).
The project is one of Chattanooga’s most all-inclusive green energy efforts and has helped the city increase its overall dedication to a cleaner environment. The largest solar park in Tennessee creates nearly 15% of the electricity used to power the facility, helping to sustain a collaborative energy source for many other locations in and around the area. In addition, the factory also houses a protected wetlands area, helping safeguard the environment and various species of wildlife that inhabit this city region.
