Electric Car Charging Times
These are the different charging methods and the amount of time it takes to charge:
- Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): You can charge your EV using a standard grounded (three-prong) 120V charging outlet (Level 1 Charging). It won’t offer a fast charging speed, but it’s good for topping off some of the juice you used on your LaGrange commute. Level 1 charging usually takes around 83 hours to reach a full charge.
- Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: Level 2 Charging requires professional installation and is brand specific. Typically they use rapid (240V+) chargers and provide significantly faster-charging rates than Level 1. DC fast chargers (instead of AC) are also common. With this type of charging method, it usually takes around 7.5-11.5 hours to reach a full charge.
- Public Charging: Charge anywhere around Naperville and beyond in parking garages, shopping malls, big-box stores, and even some apartment buildings and hotels. More charging stations are being added each day across the country. Public charging stations vary in charging types but are highly convenient. Many provide Level 2 charging. Some even offer earth-friendly renewable energy charging with wind or solar.
How do electric car charging times differ from a plug-in hybrid? In a hybrid, your charging time will likely be much faster, between 1-4 hours to fully charge. Plug-in hybrid vehicles do not rely solely on electricity as an energy source! Instead, they use electric range for a small amount of driving time and switch to gasoline power when necessary, and many models are self-charging. The Volkswagen ID.4 range is about 250 miles, so most of the time you don’t need to be concerned.
Public Charging Electric Car Charging Time
Most at-home chargers provide 3.7 kW or 7 kW charging, while public stations provide 22 kW charging, 43-50 kW rapid charging, or 125 kW rapid charging. That means you could get a complete charge (0-100%) in about an hour, but sometimes it could take up to four hours or more.
